Graduation checklist for seniors: Everything you need to know before commencement

With May just around the corner, graduating seniors are preparing for one of the biggest moments of their college career: graduation. This is a time of excitement, intense focus and celebration.

Every spring, Utah Tech University plans several key activities and traditions to wish their new alumn well. From the traditional Cloud Signing to where to pick up your graduation regalia, and even graduation dates, here’s everything you need to know.

Graduation regalia

During the Grad Fair, May 4 and 5 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., students are encouraged to visit the Alumni House to secure their regalia. Regalia will include the bright red cap and gown, as well as a tassel to attach to the cap. If the student has earned any stoles or cords, those will be included.

Regalia is required to walk at graduation, and Utah Tech advises that tassels be hung on the right side of the face during the ceremony. Graduates will move the tassel to the left side once they’ve graduated.

For those interested in customizing their caps, Utah Tech states the measurements of the caps are 9 1/2 inches square. Since caps cannot be picked up early unless requested for photos, the university suggests customizing a piece of cardstock to attach to the cap.

Cloud Signing

The Cloud Signing, this year held at the Holland Centennial Commons Lobby, is May 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Students are encouraged to write in one of the many books that make up the cloud mural of the library, signing their names and even messages for future students and interested people. Some students even put cash into the books in the hopes that they find a struggling student who may need it in the future.

Commencement Drone Show

At 9 p.m. that same day, the 2026 graduating class will be treated to a free drone show. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and snacks to the Encampment Mall lawn to enjoy the entertainment and recognize their achievement.

Graduation dates

Although every college will have a different graduation day and time, every commencement ceremony will be held at the Burns Arena.

Master’s and bachelor’s degree ceremonies are divided by college, and associate degrees are celebrated together.

May 7

The doors to each ceremony will open an hour before the event, allowing the families, friends and loved ones of graduates time to find seating. If the Burns Arena fills up, attendees will be redirected to the Eccles Fine Arts Center to watch a livestream of the event. Utah Tech recommends no student bring more than eight guests to avoid overflow issues.
