No steroids were needed for the Dixie State University softball team as it cruised past Western New Mexico University.

Dixie State matched up against WNMU over the weekend, sweeping the four-game series and outscoring the Mustangs by a combined run total of 44-9 in favor of the Red Storm.

Getting hits early and often was the theme for the Red Storm, who have been working daily on swinging the bats.

“We hit almost everyday,” said head coach Randy Simkins. “We want the other team to have to make a play to get us out.”

The Storm are now hitting an impressive .409 on the season.

Game three saw the most impressive fireworks as Dixie State put up a 14-run third inning to get a huge lead on the Mustangs. Junior first baseman Sheila Gelter kickstarted the inning by hitting a home run.

Gelter and junior outfielder Courtney Sherwin both had two home runs in the series. Hot-swinging Sherwin now leads the team with three homers this year.

Junior pitcher Michelle Duncan picked up wins number four and five on the season. Duncan has now won five straight after dropping the season opener.

“I felt great,” said Duncan, a business administration major from Gilbert, Ariz. “My team contributed to my five wins in a big way, especially this weekend by putting several runs up on the board early.”

After sweeping the series, the Storm now have a 9-2 overall record. All of DSU’s games thus far have been against non-conference opponents.

“The non-conference games allow us to see how we [work] together,” Duncan said. “Ending non-conference schedule on a high note with tough competition allows our team to continue battling throughout the season against conference matchups.”

Dixie State will begin Pacific West Conference play Friday against Azusa Pacific University in a double-header at Karl Brooks field.
