Intramural sports at Utah Tech University have been around for decades, providing students a way to stay active and engaged with the campus community.

The fall 2026 semester features five sports, with a handful of options for competition. Those who don’t have anybody to register with can still join by signing up as a free agent and getting picked up by already existing teams during the season.

Brandon Bower, a Utah Tech junior and recreation and sports management major from Redmond, Oregon joined as a free agent.

“My roommate initially signed up as a free agent and got me to join too once a team reached out to him,” Bower said. “It helped me and my roommate find a new friend group that we never would have known without it.”

This semester will include, flag football, soccer, pickleball, sand volleyball and basketball.

Flag Football

Coed Flag Football runs from Sept. 4 to Oct. 1. Teams consist of eight players: four men and four women. Team registration has passed as of Sept. 4, but participants can still join teams until Oct. 1.

There will also be a men’s flag football season from Oct. 5 to Oct. 29. Teams are required to have 7 players and registration is from Sept. 13 to Oct. 2 and costs $40 per team.

Soccer

There are three 6v6 soccer leagues running this semester, a coed, women’s and men’s. All three leagues run from Sept. 14 to Sept. 30 and registration will run from Aug. 15 to Sept. 11.

Pickleball

Pickleball is one of the most popular sports in Southern Utah, with dozens of courts calling St. George home. Following the trend, the intramural sports program decided to add pickleball to the rotation this semester.

Pickleball will run very briefly, from Sept. 22 to Sept. 24. Teams consist of two players and registration is from Aug. 30 to Sept. 18.

Sand Volleyball

Similarly to soccer, sand volleyball offers a coed, women’s and men’s league this semester. Teams will consist of at least four members, and registration will begin on Sept. 6 to Sept. 25 for $15 per team.

The season will begin on Sept. 28 and wrap up on Oct. 15.

3v3 Basketball

One of the most popular intramural sports at Utah Tech is 3v3 basketball. This year there will be a coed, women’s and men’s league. Registration is from Oct. 11 to Oct. 30 and costs $20 per team. All three seasons will run from Nov. 2 to Nov. 19.

Many students have expressed gratitude to the intramural sports program, crediting it with providing a place to not only be involved, but continue playing sports without having to be on one of Utah Tech’s official teams.

“I didn’t want to do college sports,” said Hunter Garcia, sophomore rec and sports management major from Oahu, Hawaii. “It’s a way that I can stay active and play the sports that I loved in high school.”

The intramural sports program recently got a new intramural coordinator named Jazmin Uhler. Uhler has expressed some concern, mentioning that intramural sport participation has dropped 50% over the past five years, and she hopes to increase those numbers by getting the word out more.

“A lot of students have no idea that campus recs exist, let alone intramurals,” Uhler said. “So we’ve been trying to get the word out with social media and club rush.”

Uhler encourages anybody and everybody to attend no matter what your skill level may be.

“You don’t have to have any experience or have ever played in the sport to participate,” Uhler said. “It’s really easy to become a free agent and to join any random team, and it’s a very welcoming environment.”
