Today’s outdoor concert will feature more than just music; the local bands will be playing to help send Dixie State University students to Kenya.
The concert, which will be held at the Amphitheater east of the fountain at 7:30 p.m., is also a humanitarian venture in coordination with the Youthlinc Foundation and the DSU Student Association. The event will be a launching point for finding local volunteers to help make a difference in the world.
Event coordinators will be selling wristbands for 25 cents throughout the week in order to raise funds to send DSU students Garett Garcia and Brooke Snow to Kajuki, Kenya.
DSU will match the price of each wristband sold to help cover the $5,600 needed for the trip. Garcia and Snow will be helping impoverished schools and establishing micro enterprises in the Kajuki area while they are there.
“It is a great opportunity for students to serve globally and locally and become responsible citizen scholars as our mission statement states,” said Mary Nell Lundquist, service and Americorps specialist.
And students will get a live show for their quarters.
Local band Never Anything Better will start the concert with upbeat punk music that’s been likened to Green Day. Alternative rockers Matthew Sean and the Band will follow Never Anything Better with what the lead singer said is a new sound for the group.
“We write music from the soul as we try to keep music from sounding like a broken pinball machine,” lead singer Matthew Sean said. “We have a focus on lyrics as a gateway to thought and pray that we would all love each other.”
