OPINION | Screens don’t make us careless — they make Gen Z connected

Generation Z is portrayed by older generations as the generation that does not care about the future and whose personality is sculpted by the media. But the differences between generations do not always mean the failure of being a good generation.

Gen Z, which includes people born from 1997 to 2012, face criticism and judgment for their way of thinking and values. However, Gen Z is the generation that values all human rights — from justice for everyone to equal respect for each person, regardless of who it is. Our generation does not always fit into traditional norms and, as a result, ushers changes in society.

Everybody knows that Gen Z was the first generation who grew up with the internet. Many people think that the internet and social media make the young generation lazy, careless and frivolous.

The everyday access to the internet made many teenagers interested in gaming, watching shows and chatting with friends instead of reading paper books.

In addition to the games, films and social media, Gen Z and all future generations have access to new communication, research and opportunities to show their talent and abilities to many people.

For example, Gen Z found themselves blogging, digital storytelling and creating companies that will be used by millions of people. Some people prefer to spend their days watching memes, while others use the internet for their improvement and educational goals

One way I use the internet is as an effective tool for studying. There are so many study apps and digital sources that I prefer to study with. My studying process changed when I started to use the internet for researching and memorizing the material.

Even though our generation is a digital native and we are very active in using social networks, it does not mean that we only laugh at memes and do not take anything seriously.

Access to technologies and the usage of social media do not make a person disinterested in all things happening in their country. The innovation and new possibilities for Gen Z, help them to research what is going on today in the world.

Being a member of Gen Z, I use websites of the news companies and their social media every day to learn about the important news of the day.

It is more convenient for me to be able to find all the necessary news from social media pages and hear other opinions instead of watching TV. It is a great benefit of the internet. Researching on the internet helps me to be in the know about the things happening right now in the world and how they can influence me. I care about my future and what can influence it.

Gen Z is way more united than previous generations. Social media is an important reason for the strong connection between young people.

  • We can find friends with whom we can be close.
  • There are multiple communities on the internet for any interests.
  • Gen Z is understood and heard in the social media space.

When I first started to use social media, I saw that people of my age were not as self-concerned as how older generation describes them. People my age were ready to talk to me and listen to me. It is not only about the interest of the person — it is the support Gen Z gives to each other to be close to one another.

Gen Z might be seen as a generation that does not deal with everyday problems and always looks at their screen. However, people from our generation have faced problems that previous generations never faced. I can confidently say that Gen Z is not careless — we try to be useful to society and want our future to be successful.
