SUU Petitions for Demolition Funds

After the emergency eviction of Juniper Hall, Southern Utah University President Michael T. Benson has begun petitioning for funds to aid in the demolition of the now-empty facility.

Benson visited Salt Lake City to voice his concerns on Wednesday, seeking financial support from the state’s executive branch of administrative service.

The cost of the demolition would most likely run from between $600,000 and $700,000, according to David Tanner, the vice president of facilities management and planning.  The majority of the money would be used to handle harmful asbestos chemicals used in the initial construction of the building.

However, should the petition fall through and the request be denied, the university will receive $1 million in a capital improvement fund, as it does every year, and could likely use that money to aid Juniper Hall’s destruction.
