The fall break has started for the students of Dixie State College, but not for the volleyball team as it competes in games instead of vacationing.
The team played Dominican University of California Oct. 10 at home and took a 3-0 win.
This match was different, however, because senior outside hitter Brita Jensen was injured. Jensen hurt her right wrist last week in a game against Point Loma Nazarene and was only able to play libero against Dominican.
In result of Jensen’s injury, the Red Storm had some players step up. Middle blocker Makenzi Bird and junior right side Paula VonDinklage lit up the court against the Penguins.
Freshman libero Haylee Wilkes also performed well in the back row with eight digs. Also, sophomore setter Jen Hardman, junior outside hitter Kristen Heywood and Bird led the front line defense with 11 team blocks on the night.
DSC took the lead early in the first set and kept its momentum to the 25-18, 25-15 and 25-19 victories.
The Red Storm advance to 6-8 in the overall season and 4-5 in conference play.
