Violence close to being an issue in ‘Here Comes the Boom’

If peeing your pants from watching one of the many thrillers is not your idea of a movie night, “Here Comes the Boom” is a comedic alternative.

Similar to the story line of “Nacho Libre” and “The School of Rock,” Kevin James stars in this sports comedy as Scott Voss, a 42-year-old apathetic high school biology teacher. When cutbacks threaten to cancel all the extra-curricular activities and lay off the music teacher, Voss begins to raise money to save the music program by becoming a mixed-martial arts fighter.

If you’re looking for a laugh, humor is not lacking in this show. James uses his unique personality to make the best of every scene whether it’s dancing in a Viking outfit or throwing up twice on the same guy.

The Three Stooges also come into play in this movie with the music teacher, the Dutch wrestling immigrant training James, and James himself. When all three are together, they act childish by dancing around and having an entertaining food fight, but that makes the scene better.

While this story is very funny, it’s also heartwarming to see a teacher who doesn’t care about his class take a stand and do everything he can, including getting knocked out and suffering many other injuries, so the students can keep their music program and know that some things are worth fighting for.

However, as the movie went on, I found myself cringing when the fight scenes came on. James gets his butt kicked most of the time and takes quite a few violent hits. The numerous painful-looking face punches, body slams and knockouts were hard to watch, especially at the end when it started to get very bloody. However, even at this point of the show, James is still trying to make the scene funny.

What was lacking were the training scenes. There were numerous scenes of James cage fighting for real, but not enough training scenes to show he was getting better and to move the story along.

Humor and action are some of the best qualities of movies, and while this show can be violent at times, it’s one I recommend you see at least once in theaters.
