Students glean information from doomsday films

Everyone has a theory about when and how the world will end, and most of them come from the movies.

Doomsday movies have been on the rise since Y2K and will probably continue long after Dec. 21, too.

Many DSC students have favorite end of the world movies, and some even think the movies could be realistic.

LuEllen Lang, a freshman psychology major from Hurricane, said “I am Legend” was her favorite doomsday flick because she actually remembered it.

Many like Lang enjoyed the post-apocalyptic ideas of “I am Legend,” and other students favored the zombie invasion movies.

Jason Durr, a junior biology major from Sebastopol, Calif., favored the zombie genre.

“My favorite [movie] is ‘Dawn of the Dead’ because it’s by George A. Romero, the father of modern zombies,” Durr said.

He also said it was his favorite doomsday movie because of the plot.

“Who doesn’t love a good zombie apocalypse?” Durr said. “This is one of the first and best because it takes place in just some small town in a mall that could be anywhere.”

Durr also said he enjoyed other end of the world titles like “The Road,” “Wall-E” and “Planet of the Apes.”

Almost every end of the world movie has a different take on how the world will end, whether it’s war or a virus that raises the dead.

Lang said if she had her choice she would prefer to have a doomsday ending that was quick so that no one suffered.

“I think ‘I am Legend’ could be pretty accurate,” Lang said. “If researching doctors aren’t careful they could create a virus.”

Durr also thought the spread of a virus would be the case, but his perspective was more focused on the recent zombie movies.

“A few friends and I talk about the zombie attack, and we already have a plan set up,” Durr said. “Plus, it just seems like the most survivable scenario.”

Check out other films like “2012,” “Armageddon,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Soylent Green,” “Deep Impact,” “Zombieland,” “28 Days Later” and “Contagion” for more renditions on how the world could possibly end and how humanity will react.
