Running, obstacles and mud—these are just a few of the features of upcoming running events around Washington County.

Between Dixie State University’s annual Great Race, the Hurricane Mud Run and the ROTC’s Heroes Havoc, student runners can look forward to staying fit and having fun.

The Great Race is a 10-man relay with a number of random obstacles and tasks to complete. The race is part of D-Week and is on April 12 from 6-7 p.m. at Hansen Stadium.

The Great Race has been a huge event in years past, and students should expect this to continue.

“I’m running four times a week,” said Dillon Barclay, a freshman business major from Salt Lake City. “I try to make and keep running adventurous.”

Barclay is planning on running the Great Race with the Dixie Serves Club. He has been trying to run two to three miles each time he runs.

Some good ways to get ready for the Great Race obstacles could be by running the Hurricane Mud Run 5K and the Heroes Havoc.

The Hurricane Mud Run is on April 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and starts behind Sand Hollow Reservoir. This is the inaugural Mud Run, so the sponsors are hoping to get a good turnout. Runners run a 5K and also go through military-style obstacles in the mud. To register, and for more information about the Hurricane Mud Run, visit www.hurricanemudrun.com.

“What could be more fun than running a race in the mud with tons of other people?” said Ethan Janson, a freshman integrated studies major from St. George. “It’s every kids dream.”

The Heroes Havoc is the key event for the ROTC club each year and is also an obstacle-based event. According to the ROTC website connected to dixie.edu, obstacles include a wall climb, marksmanship, a tractor tire tip, a mud pit drag, two rope bridges and a grenade toss.

For students who are more traditional runners, there are races coming up without obstacles.

Runners can race in the Run 4 Kids 1K, 5K and 10K, which is in connection with The Learning Center for Families. This race is on April 6, so runners need to register quickly. Visit www.run-4-kids.com to register.

If students don’t feel like getting in the mud, there is the Breathe Easy 5K and 10K on April 20. The race begins from the former St. George Municipal Airport on top of Airport Hill. Register at breatheeasy5k.org/.
