Tuacahn continues Disney partnership with ‘Mary Poppins,’ ‘Mulan’

Tuacahn, surrounded by the natural red cliffs of Snow Canyon, is the place to be for live summer entertainment.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Tuacahn has been given the rights to produce a Disney musical, and it starts on May 30 with “Mary Poppins.”

“Even if someone has already seen ‘Mary Poppins,’ they really haven’t seen ‘Mary Poppins’ until they see it with a spoonful of Tuacahn’s magic,” said Scott S. Anderson, Tuacahn’s artistic director.

There is no shortage of female leads this summer, and Mary Poppins is the classic that will start it all for Tuacahn, running every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through Oct. 25.

Another Disney favorite is “Mulan.” Along with her ill-behaved sidekick Mushu, Mulan will save the Emperor in Tuacahn’s 75-minute, one act production of this Disney classic. This show will play indoor at the Hafen Theatre from June 27 through Aug. 10.

Kandis Barton, a senior communication major from St. George, is a faithful patron of the theater. She attends at least two shows a year, which includes a Disney production and “Thriller.”

“I saw ‘Aladdin’ last year and loved it,” Barton said. “I am excited about ‘Mulan.’ I love the atmosphere of the theater; there aren’t any big crowds, and every seat is a good seat.”

One more favorite that highlights females overcoming the odds is “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Set in New York City in 1922, young Millie Dillmount moves to the city in search of a new life at a time when women were just entering the workforce.

Tuacahn has also been granted the rights, as the only professional regional theater, to present Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Starlight Express.”

This production features an entire cast on Rollerblades. The stage set and players come into the audience in this fast-paced musical that follows a child’s dream when his train set comes to life. It will run Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from July 4 through Oct. 22.

Tuacahn will continue its long-running tradition of Odyssey Dance Theatre’s production of “Thriller” on Oct. 25. This is a must-see for its spectacular technical aspects and spooky, artistic dance, which pays homage to the stars of Hallows’ Eve.

“I have been to the last eight of the last nine productions of Thriller,” Barton said. “I missed one for a family event, but I will be there this fall for sure.”

Prices for children start at $29.95 and adults at $35.50
