Flag football kicks off year: Intramurals help students relieve stress

Every August, students at Dixie State University begin to attend classes and, consequentially, desire to do something involving more excitement.

Luckily for them, there is a full slate of intramural sports on the horizon this fall, and many students are awaiting the opportunity to relieve stress and have fun with friends. Along with the opportunity for great competition, these incentives are what keep students coming back for more.

Bailey Bundy, a senior biology major from St. George, loves the atmosphere of intramural basketball games.

“I have played in a lot of close games because there is really good competition,” she said. “I love that I can let out bad energy from the stress of school and have fun.”

Jonathan Gleave, a sophomore general education major from Bunkerville, Nev., is among those who will be participating in football. As a multi-sport athlete in high school, Gleave has a passion for football. Playing with others who share this passion is what he loves most about intramurals.

“Football is my favorite sport and intramural,” he said. “It’s just good to have some fun with people who care about the sport too.”

Students participating in intramurals this fall will notice a change with the online registration. This year, Dixie has made the switch from Athleague to IMLeagues.

Those who previously were registered with Athleague have automatically been registered with IMLeagues. These students will only have to reset their password their first time logging in.

David Howell, assistant director of intramurals, said the switch was made after Athleague became a part of IMLeagues.

“I think it was a good switch…after looking at IMLeagues,” he said. “I think they’ll be the better resource for us and for the students.”

Howell also said the usual list of intramural sports will be getting some company this year. Spikeball, a volleyball-like sport played with two players on each team, will be offered both indoor and outdoor.

“It should be a fun one that we’re going to be adding this year,” Howell said. “It’s a pretty fun game; you’ll have to look it up online.”

Students interested in participating in intramurals can go to the intramural website at www.dixie.edu/intramurals. There, an IMLeagues account can be created for those who are new to intramurals. A Dmail account or dixie.edu email address is required to verify that the user is either a student or a faculty member.

A comprehensive list of the sports and events being offered this fall is available online at www.dixie.edu/intramurals or in the intramural office located in the southeast corner of the Student Activities Center.

The fall season of intramurals kicks off with coed flag football. Each team must consist of a minimum of four men and four women. Interested teams must register and pay the $35 registration fee by Aug. 30.
