The Dixie State University men’s golf team is preparing for finals week — on the golf course.
The Red Storm prepared all year for their biggest match of the season in the upcoming Pacific West Conference championship Thursday to Friday at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo, Calif.
A big key for Dixie in the conference tournament will be sophomore Kenny You, a communication major from Salt Lake City.
You has the best season scoring average in DSU history. You is shooting an average of 72.4 strokes per round of 18 holes.
You said the key to his record-breaking season has been good, old-fashioned hard work.
“I work very hard on all aspects of my game,” You said. “I try not to leave anything to chance when I’m at a tournament; I make sure that I am prepared to the fullest.”
The Red Storm hope to play as well as they did earlier in the season when the team went to Vallejo. DSU took first place in the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, held at the 6,722 yard par-72 Hiddenbrooke Golf Club, which is the same site at which the PacWest Conference tournament will be held.
“We are confident that we will do well because we won on the course we are playing at for conference,” You said. “It’s a good course and we’re happy to be there.”
Dixie State has yet to win the PacWest Conference tournament but has accomplished third place multiple times in past years.
“We feel that our potential is to win it and we would be stoked to play well,” said Skylar Schone, a sophomore accounting major from St. George. “Our goal is the national championship and this is just one more step to getting there.”
Dixie State will tee off in its two-day tournament Thursday at 8 a.m.
