Volleyball takes two wins in Seattle Pacific tournament

The Dixie State women’s volleyball team took a two-win, two-loss record on the road this weekend as they took on four teams in the Seattle Pacific Tournament.

The Storm started the tournament 0-3 against California State University, Los Angeles. Dixie lost the last game by five points on Friday.

But that disappointment didn’t last long as Dixie started a two-game win streak later that day. The Storm then defeated California State University, Chico 3-0 six hours later in close sets. The women beat Chico by an average of three points in the last two sets.

The Storm then went head-to-head with Cal Poly Pomona at noon on Saturday in another 3-0 sweep. Senior right side Nicole Koehler averaged 13 points this game with senior outside hitter Maddie Rex coming up close with 12.5 points.

But the Storm let up Saturday night as Seattle Pacific University defeated Dixie 3-1. The Storm left the court with 58 total points to SPU’s 70.

Head coach Robyn Felder said, overall, junior middle Makenzi Bird had a great weekend on the offensive front. Bird nearly hit .400 during the tournament. She said Bird transitions well and is a “firecracker” on the court.

Another woman Felder said shined through this weekend was senior libero Alex Anderson. Anderson was named as the libero on the all-tournament team, and Felder said she was well deserving of it. She said Anderson not only served, but also passed extremely well.

“This is a great starting point for us to see what we need to work on,” Felder said. “Our blocking as well as our mental game need to improve as we continue to grow and develop.”

The Storm hit the nets in Riverside, California, Thursday for the GNAC/PacWest Crossover Tournament.
