The Dixie State University women’s soccer team sailed to victory in its first game in Hawaii.

The Trailblazers took on BYU-Hawaii Saturday in Hilo, Hawaii and earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

In the ninth minute, senior midfielder Alexis Torres scored the games only goal. It was also the only shot on goal by DSU.

After a back and forth first half, DSU maintained a 1-0 lead.

The Trailblazers defense continued its strong play and limited the Seasiders to seven total shots.

The match became extra physical in the second half as DSU earned two yellow cards and BYU-Hawaii earned a red card ejection.

DSU fended off BYU-Hawaii for the remainder of the match and won its third straight game with a 1-0 shut out victory.

“We were happy to come away with the win,” said sophomore defender Nichole Mertz, a nursing major from Springville. “We look forward to a better faster game on Monday.”

At 5-5 overall and 3-2 in Pacific West Conference play, DSU looks to continue its current three-match winning streak Monday at Hawaii Pacific University.
