Dixie State University women’s basketball leaves 0-2 after their first 2016-2017 game openers of the season.

Women’s basketball played two home games this weekend in the Dixie State Tournament. They played Colorado Mesa University Friday losing 54-68 with Ashlee Burge, center post and a junior business major from Riverton pulling 13 points for the Trailblazers. Trailblazers later battled against Simon Fraser University Sunday losing 46-60 with Jordan Tramina, a general studies major form Las Vegas leading the team with nine points.

In the match-up against CMU, the Trailblazers lead the game in the first quarter 17-13 but lost the lead from there on out. DSU came back close at the half and trailed 36-33 to CMU.

“Our stuff is very unique and different, but I thought their adjustments at half were solid,” head coach J.D. Gustin said. Gustin also said the team will be looking for stronger rebounds in Sundays game versus Simon Fraser University.

Matti Ventling, a point guard and junior biology major from Las Vegas came out with 12 points in the CMU game.

“We did really well for the offense, all our shots we took were wide open we just needed to finish them out,”  Ventling said. “This being the first game we are going to build from here and adjust to be strong for the coming games.”

Starting the second game against what coach Gustin said as “a tough and a big team to play against,” DSU battled hard defensively in the first quarters yet fell short as the game proceed onward. With a total of 28 turnovers, DSU cut the chance of finishing the game with a win.

At the end of the third period, the Trailblazers shortened the lead gap falling 47-37. By the fourth period, SMU handled the ball well and put pressure on DSU leaving the game 46-60.

Women’s basketball will head to Chico, California for their first away games this season against Sonoma State University Friday and Chico State University Saturday.
