The Dixie State University softball team didn’t wasn’t anytime scoring in the 2017 season.

DSU hosted Northwest Nazarene University Thursday for its first games of the season. The Trailblazers earned its first two wins of the year, 11-1 and 8-2.

The first game saw DSU push across six runs in the first inning. It then put up five more runs in the fourth inning behind a grand slam from sophomore third baseman Dani Bartholf. The Trailblazers ended the game via the 10-run mercy rule in the fifth inning, winning 11-1.

Game two carried on where game one left off. Senior shortstop and sophomore catcher Jessica Gonzalez each belted two-run homers in the first inning giving the Trailblazers a 4-1 lead. DSU pushed across four more runs in the fourth and secured the victory, 8-2.

Junior outfielder Janessa Bassett led the Trailblazers offense going 4-6 between the two games from the lead-off spot. DSU combined for 18 combined hits as a team in its first two games of the year.
