Utah Tech University has a wide variety of resources readily available for students. There are a lot of hidden gems incoming students may not be aware of. There is on-campus help for anything from finding study buddies to finding a job post-graduation.

Writing Center

The Utah Tech Writing Center aims to support undergraduate students by offering peer-to-peer dialogue and small group instruction for developing, drafting and revising their writing.

The Writing Center offers three different types of tutoring to fit students the best.

General tutoring focuses on providing general writing advice and help with no appointment needed. While appointments are recommended, they aren’t required for general tutoring. Departmental tutoring is aimed at upper-division students who need help with specific field writing styles. They offer help with writing abstracts, thesis statements, rhetorical analyses and more.

To support online students, they also offer online tutoring. This service aims to provide the same level of support as in-person sessions for those who cannot visit in person. The Writing Center is located on the fourth floor of the Jeffrey R. Holland Centennial Commons & Library.

Peer Coaching Program

The Peer Coach Program at Utah Tech supports first-year students with one-on-one mentoring to ease their transition into college.

Peer coaching isn’t just for freshmen. New transfer or international students can also request a peer coach to help them navigate their first year at Utah Tech.

Each student receives a personalized plan covering time management, study strategies, campus involvement and stress management. With 40 peer coaches representing all seven colleges, students get specialized support from someone who is learning similar material.

Peer coach Trevi Ogilvie, a senior marketing major from Heber City, said: “My favorite part of my position is meeting and interacting with freshman students. I think it’s cool that I can be a part of their first-year experience.”

Ogilvie said her position has caused her to be invested in our school as a whole. She also said she loves meeting the incoming freshmen and showing them everything Utah Tech has to offer.

“It’s so cliche, but I would say to not be afraid and just ask. Literally, everyone in the program wants to help their students and other students on campus… The Peer Coach Program has an initiative to help not only freshman students even though that is who we are directly for,” Ogilvie said.

Students can register for the Trailblazer Connections course to be matched with a peer coach, who will guide them through activities, monitor their progress and provide ongoing support throughout the semester.

Blazer Food Pantry

The Blazer Pantry is a campus resource for faculty, staff and students facing food insecurity. This initiative addresses immediate needs and fosters a supportive environment, helping students thrive academically and personally.

To register for Blazer Pantry, you can fill out a registration form online.

Aliza Simpson, a sophomore population health major from Pocatello, Idaho, said, “I stopped by the food pantry after class and was thrilled to see so many different varieties of what I needed as well as tons of other healthy options for students.”

Students can also opt-in to receive notifications through the myUT app to use the Come & Get It program. With the Come & Get It initiative, students can help reduce food waste by picking up extra meals or goodies that are left over from campus events or club meetings.

Booth Wellness Center

The Booth Wellness Center at Utah Tech provides medical and mental health services for students, faculty and staff. They offer general medical care, lab work, sick visits and brief mental health services.

The Booth Wellness Center offers acute medical services for students, staff and faculty. This makes it easier to identify immediate health challenges with experienced, licensed practitioners. The center provides short-term treatment for illnesses, injuries or other conditions but does not offer primary or long-term care.

The center also focuses on health education, covering topics like suicide awareness and stress management. They offer counseling for individuals, groups and couples. Some programs provide educational services and information to promote wellness-based approaches, enhance coping skills and encourage healthy lifestyles.

The center supports Utah Tech students, staff and faculty in achieving academic, career and personal goals, and is free to enroll.

Career coaches

Utah Tech has a Career Services office with career coaches to help you. They can help with anything from resume building to helping you find a career after graduation. The Career Services office is located on the fifth floor of the Holland building.

Asha Stapley, a career coach at Utah Tech, said, “I just love helping students figure out what they can possibly do with their careers.”

She also said there is multiple resources students have through the Career Services office like Handshake and resume builders. Handshake is a search platform where students can find jobs or internships both connected to the university and not.

Stapley said the best way to figure out how they can help you is by coming in and learning about these resources and figuring out what works best.

“Come in and talk to us. A lot of the time [students] just don’t know what they don’t know… I think just having a conversation with us is really helpful,” Stapley said.

Utah Tech offers an array of resources designed to support student success. Students are well equipped to thrive academically and personally. More information on all of these resources can be found on the myUT app.
