Lake Powell Death

14-year-old Matthew Parker was pronounced dead Thursday after a late night boat ride at Lake Powell.

Glen Canyon Recreation Area spokesman Max King told SUN News the Hurricane resident was enjoying a trip with his Boy Scouts group near Antelope Island. Around 9:30 p.m. the group was making a return trip in a boat from the island to Wahweap marina in the dark and struck a shallow rock, sending the boy overboard.

Attempts were made to save his life, but shortly after the accident he was pronounced dead. “After an investigation, the boy is presumed to have died from traumatic injury rather than drowning,” King said.

Two others sustained injuries in the accident but nothing life threatening.

Parker’s funeral will be held on Saturday, August 6, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hurricane 8th Ward chapel. That day also commemorates Parker’s 15th birthday.
