Students prepare for Cardboard Campout

For all who got rained out last year, the weekend forecast for St. George is sunny and your shot at another cardboard campout is in full force.

The Dixie State College Cardboard Campout is Friday evening on the Encampment mall. The festivities start at 7:30 p.m. and continue until breakfast the next morning. Students are welcome to sign up in the student government room in the Gardner Center.

While there will be some cardboard and duct tape available to use, it is recommended that students bring their own as well, along with pillows, blankets and either $5 or two cans of food to participate. The food and money raised will be donated to the Utah Food Bank. While two cans is the minimum entry requirement, any extra food that can be donated will be greatly appreciated.

Jordyn Havenhold, a junior elementary education major from Logandale, Nev., and Dixie State College Student Association service chair, is in charge of the event this year. She said the campout is intended to help students recognize and remember there are people in dire circumstances everywhere, and even a little help goes a long way.

In the past, students have started working on their cardboard creations hours before the event actually started. From castles with drawbridges to five-bedroom flats, the Cardboard Campout gives students the opportunity to donate to a good cause, gain an awareness of the circumstances that surround them, and have a little fun in the process.
