Dixie State College is joining forces with MTV.
MTV producers chose DSC as one of three colleges featured on the network’s Woodie Awards. The Woodie Awards were made to highlight music voted best by the U.S. college audience.
To kick off spring break, upcoming performer Macklemore and his partner, Ryan Lewis, will be performing at DSC. MTV chose to come to Dixie to film the concert and showcase it on the Woodie Awards show March 17.
Mazie Ludlow, DSC Student Association vice president of communication, and a junior communication major from Turlock, Calif., said there would be added hype to the Macklemore concert because more students know MTV than Macklemore.
“MTV is something everyone grew up on, and to be featured by them on the Woodie Awards will bring more publicity to our school,” Ludlow said.
Ludlow said MTV will edited the film and shown during the awards.
“When they come, they are filming the crowd, the concert, and what happens backstage,” Ludlow said.
Ludlow said MTV looks at colleges around the United States and picks school concerts it think will draw a larger crowd.
“Macklemore is a pretty big deal,” Ludlow said. “He went from no one knowing about him to No. 1 on iTunes.”
Macklemore is an upcoming Rap artist from Seattle who has released one mixtape, three EPs and two albums since 2000. He partnered up with Ryan Lewis to create their newest album, “The Heist,” which sold more than 78,000 copies in the first week it was released.
Sami Warnick, DSCSA vice president of student life and a senior business major from Wanship, said DSC is lucky to feature Macklemore.
“We are almost co-hosting the concert alongside of MTV if you think about it,” Warnick said. “It is interesting to think just a few weeks ago we were making national news because of the name change controversy, and now we are making it to MTV.”
Sami Warnick said MTV heard about DSC being the party school of Utah.
“It is pretty ironic that our party reputation is what brings positive attention,” Warnick said. “But I guess we better live up to it and have the biggest crowd there.”
The Macklemore concert is March 8, and tickets are $15 with student I.D. and $20 without. Tickets can be picked up at the DSC box office.
The Woodie Awards will premiere on MTV March 17 at 8 p.m.
