University Avenue solid start; DSU, St. George need to do more

The St. George City Council voted to rename 700 East to University Avenue, and while it has high hopes, it falls just a little short.

Administration at Dixie State University is heading in the right direction; it just needs to include the community and get non-student residents excited as well.

Renaming this popular street will grab some attention, I’m sure of it. I’m just not sure if it’s the kind of attention the university needs. Is renaming a street really a big deal?

In order for administration’s efforts to push people over the edge, the community and student body need to be at least 1 percent proactive in making that happen. Residents are going to simply drive by and think, “Oh, cool,” rather than: “Wow, that’s interesting. I wonder how that came about. This must really be a town that loves its university.” Yeah, right.

I’d like to see a DSU version of The Pie in St. George. For those of you who are Ute fans, you know exactly what I’m talking about. St. George needs a good bar and restaurant for college students to hang out and get some fantastic pizza, all the while enjoying the university memorabilia scattered across the walls, windows and even engraved in the bricks.

Who knows? Maybe in the near future something similar will open on University Avenue.

DSUSA and administration are putting forth great efforts but with little prevail. The university needs more connection to the community, but residents need to be more involved than they appear to be currently.

University Avenue isn’t going to change the city overnight, but it will surprise some.

We know what we want, and we are a generation that gets what it wants. So if you want St. George to be a university town, stand up and suggest something more worthwhile than simply a new street name.
