Marriage equality makes Utah better

What was once a great victory in Utah for legalizing gay marriage quickly became an incredible failure when it was taken away.

Some people’s arguments against same sex marriage may be that it ruins the sanctity of marriage and it will soon spiral down a road towards other things like polygamy and incestual marriage, but I think man-robot marriage actually has a brighter future.

Gay marriage doesn’t ruin the sanctity of marriage the same way using an iPod doesn’t ruin your PC. It may not be what was intended but everyone benefits from it.

Some fear that same sex marriage will harm “family values” but they’re about as much as Kanye West’s egotistical remarks do, which is not all. Wanting to start a family rarely entails trying to ruin one. If a gay couple is wed it is also easier for them to adopt children.

Same-sex couples have an easier time and a better chance in adoption decisions if they are wed. A study published in Pediatrics on June 7, 2010 noted that children of lesbian mothers were rated higher than children of heterosexual parents in social and academic competence and had fewer social problems. They had also found that kids who had gay fathers were “as well-adjusted as those adopted by heterosexual parents.”

Homosexual spouses also get federal benefits which help them keep work, stay healthy, and better support children. The benefits help cover health insurance which will both help the couple themselves and the children they could be potentially raising. Whatever fortune one partner has will be inherited by their significant other if one dies, which helps the then widowed spouse financially. It also puts the couple in protection of spousal abuse laws which help protect them from one another in case of anything.

The phrase “It’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,” implies that love was originally between a man and a women, but if we’re basing our ideals now off of the beginning of mankind, I suppose there should be a debate about clothes as well.

Banning same same sex marriage doesn’t stop same sex couples and no matter how marriage was traditional defined will stop them from trying to get their rights. Since 2004, 17 states have legalized gay marriage as well as the District of Columbia and the fight for gay rights shouldn’t end until it is spread across the entire nation.
