CBU Lancers too much for DSU women

A hot start and record-breaking performance were nowhere near enough for DSU women’s basketball as it fell to nationally-ranked No. 5 California Baptist University 93-64 Saturday.

Senior guard Leslie Tademy picked up her 233rd career assist to move her into first place on the DSU all-time list. Fittingly, the pass that gave her the record was to fellow senior Taylor Mann, a connection that has become a common occurrence at Burns Arena.

Midway through the first quarter, DSU had kept pace with the Lancers and trailed by just two points. From that point on, it was all CBU. The Lancers exploded on the offensive end, scoring 58 points in the first half on nearly 60 percent from the field en route to their 14th consecutive win.

“That was rough,” head coach Jenny Thigpin said. “We didn’t play with any energy for most of the game and that hurt us, but I saw a lot of fight in my team. That is always a positive with this group.”

The Storm, however, couldn’t buy a basket all game long. Shooting just 31.4 percent on the floor and 25 percent from distance, DSU put up just 40 points in the first three quarters.

The lead grew to as large as 39 points in the third quarter before the Storm found their rhythm and outscored CBU 24-20 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late as DSU fell to 4-9 in conference play and 11th place in the standings.

Senior center Taylor Mann struggled from the field but still managed to notch her 13th double-double on the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Junior guard Aliya Davis added 14 points and four steals while sophomore forward Ashlee Burge shot 4-5 for 10 points.

“We just didn’t come to play the first half,” said Mann, an English major from Castle Dale. “They had more energy and wanted it more and they took advantage of that. It’s hard to make a come back when you start the game off going down that much.”

The tough road continues for DSU at Burns Arena Thursday when they face off with another juggernaut in the 13-1 Academy of Art Urban Knights at 5:30 p.m.
