Dixie State University women’s soccer team’s postseason hopes were crushed in the final seconds in 1-0 loss to Concordia-Irvine University Thursday.

The match was a defensive battle, neither team able to score. Through 89 minutes, the stalemate continued. But with 38 seconds left, CIU finally broke through for a 1-0 lead.

DSU had one final shot to tie when sophomore defender Nichole Mertz lobbed an pass near the goal from out of bounds but the ball was helplessly knocked away and the match finished 1-0.

With the loss, the Trailblazers were eliminated from playoff contention.

“We cake out in the second half really hard,” said freshman forward Kamie Hunter, a nursing major from Hooper. “It’s just sad that it had to end [like that].”

DSU plays its final game of the season Saturday against California Baptist University at Legend Solar Stadium at 7 p.m.
