Have you ever wanted to be in a game show, be a high roller in Las Vegas or even be part of a pageant? If so, events hosted by the Dixie State University Student Association might just be for you.
DSUSA pushes to hold weekly activities for students on campus. DSUSA is a group of students who are a part of the university government which gives the students a voice for activities.
Regardless of the number of students that show up, they are always looking to find ways to help Trailblazer students be involved in activities they might be interested in.
“We want to have things on campus tailored for the freshman so they can get a feel for the college life and meet new people” Zoe Short, DSUSA member and freshman communication studies major, from Layton, said. “Overall, we have been pretty successful for what we are trying to do.”
The most recent event was known as “Friend Feud,” which was very similar to the T.V. show “Family Feud,” as contestants participated in a game show scenario answering on-the-spot questions in front of an audience.
This event was held in the Kenneth N. Gardener Student Center on Feb. 12. Students and friends arrived at the game looking forward to the fun.
“I honestly like how it engages students,” said Elysha Famatua, a senior accounting major from Pago Pago, America Samoa. “It really stands by the ‘active learning. active Life’ [DSU] pushes.”
As these events look to engage the students in activities full of participation, Short also said they look to give away prizes to get the audience involved in the activities.
Zoe Cunningham, a freshman recreation and sport management major from Queensland, Australia, said: “There were a lot of people there having a good time. People were into the game which made it a lot more interesting and fun.”
By attending events, one can find and make new friends, help raise money for different organizations, and create new college experiences.
Casino Night and Mr. Dixie are amongst the two more commonly known activities DSUSA put together and tend to have the highest attendance rate as well.
Even though the events may be geared toward freshmen, upperclassmen are always welcome to participate in the events. A big event Short and the rest of the DSUSA staff said they are preparing for is the “Color Daze” that will have lights, music and a chalk festival on April 1.
