In honor of March being Women’s History Month, Dixie State University is hosting a variety of events to celebrate female empowerment.

Women’s Resource Center events

The Women’s Resource Center, located in the Val A. Browning Learning Resource Center, is hosting a series of events this month to encourage women to take charge of their professional and academic careers. Dru Bottoms, director of the WRC, said Utah struggles with equal pay and equal access to professional opportunities for women, so the center is working to change that narrative.

“Utah has one of the lowest rates for females going on to graduate school, so we want our female students to graduate with a bachelor’s degree and move on to a higher degree so that they can become more economically stable in the future,” Bottoms said.

Upcoming Events

March 9 to March 29The Women and Family Academic Engagement club will be hosting a service project to collect grooming supplies for women living in shelters.

March 9 – Tiffany Clason, director of the Utah department of alcohol beverage control, will be presenting “Women in Leadership: Coming from a Place of Yes” from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Jeffrey R. Holland Centennial Commons in room 550.

March 22 – Mary McFadden, administrative assistant of education/family studies & human development, will be presenting “Women Warriors” to highlight women in law enforcement and the military. The event will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Zion Room of the Holland building.

March 29 – Hazel Sainsbury, director of equity compliance and Title IX coordinator, will be presenting “Equality in the Workplace” to discuss sexual harassment and empowering women in the workplace. The event will run from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m in the Dunford Auditorium.

The WRC will also be highlighting female students, faculty and staff on their Instagram for the entire month of March to celebrate the impact women have made across campus.

Women’s History Month display

The library is also involved with Women’s History Month through a display of books and movies that empower women and inform the community about the range of challenges women face in the world. Dianne Aldrich, head of public services at the library, said the display strives to bring awareness to the DSU community about important women throughout history.

“With women’s history, we wanted to include items that weren’t just about the women that have fought for women’s rights throughout history but also books that would show women or talk about women as leaders,” Aldrich said.

Aldrich’s favorite book in the display is “Women and Leadership: Real Lives, Real Lessons.” She said the book helped her to understand the different challenges men and women face when it comes to holding leadership positions.

Women in Business club

The Women in Business club is a new club on campus that is seeking to provide women in business with access to professional mentors and networking opportunities. Felicia Barcinas, a sophomore business management major from Clinton, serves as the marketing and social media manager for the club.

“It is important to establish a place where women in the business school feel supported,” Barcinas said.

The club hosted a “Welcome to Women in Business” event on March 3 where a panel of speakers held discussions about various aspects of business, including a conversation about investing practices. The club is hoping to build up club attendance to showcase there are mentors in the community to support women pursuing careers in business.

Whether you are searching for professional development or just a sense of community with other female students, there is sure to be an event during Women’s History Month that will meet your needs.
