After nearly one week, crews continue battling the Herbs Fire.

While the blaze burns in an isolated area of Zion National Park, it is not posing an immediate threat to any private or public structures, and the number of burned acres has been reduced.

Officials say lightning started the blaze last weekend. Due to more accurate mapping, the fire has consumed 195 acres, not the 250 originally reported. because of oak brush, pinyon-juniper, and mixed conifer. It is confined to Herbs Point, an isolated mesa top of the Kolob Canyons section of the national park.

Three helicopters, one wildland engine, and 20 firefighters originally responded, but the effort is now down to a single helicopter and one wildland engine. As of Thursday at 12:00 p.m. the fire was 85 percent contained. With slightly cooler weather in the forecast, crews say they are continuing to make “good progress” toward full containment.
