Southern Quill deadline looms, provides opportunity

Attention writers and artists: The Southern Quill submission deadline is rapidly approaching.

The Southern Quill is an annual literary magazine published by Dixie State University since the 1950s. It includes short stories, non-fiction, poetry and photography submitted by citizens of southern Utah. Participants are eligible to submit up to two short stories (2,000 word limit), five poems, and/or three works of visual art. The submission deadline is Jan. 20. Creative minds from DSU and the community are eligible to participate.

Lacy Culpepper, a seniorEnglish major from Clinton and managing editor of The Southern Quill, wrote in an email, “Publication in a literary journal like The Southern Quill will allow them to demonstrate to employers and admissions boards that they can write, and therefore communicate, effectively, and that they can produce work of the highest quality.”

Students who are involved with The Southern Quill also have the opportunity to connect with other published writers who also appreciate creative work. For a DSU student submitting poetry, he or she will automatically be considered for the Annie Atkin Tanner Memorial Poetry Scholarship Fund.

The Tanner Fund was started in 1972 by Dr. Vasco M. Tanner to honor his wife Annie. All poetry submitted to The Southern Quill by students at DSU will be considered for the scholarship. The Southern Quill editors select their top ten poetry submissions and forward them to the Tanner family, who will chose first, second and third place winners.

The Southern Quill will also debut a young writers section this year that will include the work of middle and high school students in the area. People submitting to the young writers section must follow the same guidelines listed above. The deadline for young writers is Feb. 1 at midnight.  All submissions should be sent to [email protected].
