BuzzFeed Food Creation: Pumpkin waffles not great

Share This:

People stress and fuss over Thanksgiving dinner, so they completely forget about the most important meal of the day: breakfast.

Thankfully, BuzzFeed created a way to taste Thanksgiving food earlier in the day. I’ve never been a fan of pumpkin, so I attempted to become one by trying a pumpkin recipe.

I started off with two bowls: one for the wet ingredients and one for the dry ingredients. In the wet ingredients bowl, I mixed together pumpkin puree, eggs, melted butter and brown sugar.

I mixed the ingredients together until they formed a gooey, orange mixture. Perfect.

I focused on the dry ingredients bowl next. I mixed together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, allspice and ground ginger.

With both mixtures complete, I combined them.  I was dismayed at how thick the batter got when I mixed the ingredients together.

Something went wrong. I added splashes of milk, which loosened the batter somewhat, but it still wasn’t the right consistency.

This made the waffle iron transfer a trickier task. I had to scoop out the dreadful mixture and spread it onto the iron because it wouldn’t pour out.

It took forever to cook, so I turned my attention to making the syrup. In a small pot, I added pure maple syrup and apple cider. I let the mixture simmer and stirred occasionally. It was supposed to start thickening, but it didn’t. I even took the mixture off the heat for a while, but it remained thin.

Yeah, I messed up the syrup too.

When the cat barf-colored waffle was done, I got the chance to taste it. The flavor itself wasn’t absolutely terrible, but it left a bitter aftertaste on my tongue, and the texture was dry. At least the runny syrup and a slab of butter on top made the waffle somewhat edible.

I concluded that I added too much spice and not enough moisture to the recipe. I rewatched the video and found that I missed an entire ingredient: milk. It wasn’t listed on the recipe list I followed. When I remembered to add milk, it was too late.

If you try this recipe, be aware that the recipe list and the video don’t fully match up.

This recipe has the potential to be awesome when done correctly. I still don’t like pumpkin, but I’m not dissuaded by this fail. I’ll try making these waffles again for my family on Thanksgiving morning. I’ll be ever so thankful if they turn out the way they should.
