Paying attention to insurance vital

It’s something no young adult ponders, and it affects how fast we want to go in our brand new cars.

Young adults, myself included, are somewhat busy and especially lazy. We take things for granted: having a car that mom and dad helped us buy, receiving scholarships that help us get through school, and for some of us, being able to still live with our parents, and especially, car insurance.

I’ve had to remind myself not to take these things for granted. But it wasn’t until this summer that I realized I’ve been taking car insurance for granted.

I was in an accident a couple months ago where I was badly rear ended. The person who hit me didn’t have a valid driver’s license and had absolutely no car insurance. After a long, frustrating two weeks, my insurance company was gracious enough to cover my totaled car and allow me to buy a new one.

Having car insurance is pretty great.

I thought about what it would have been like if I didn’t have car insurance. I could be without a car, because there’s no way I would have paid thousands of dollars to repair it.

Most of us young adults are lucky; we get to stay on our parents’ insurance for an extended amount of time. Usually, young adults can stay on their parent’s insurance plan until the age of 26. But once we reach that point, we fall into a black abyss of paying insurance bills, and we realize how important it is to have these adult-like necessities.

There are some ways to help young adults feel like they’re not drowning in the abyss of payments , like researching the right kind of insurance plan that includes the coverage you feel is most needed. Make sure to look at ratings of different insurance companies, and it’s best to understand the plan your buying, like what’s covered and what’s not. Also, if your parents were willing to keep you on their plan, I’m sure they’re willing to help you find a new plan when you’re ready to go off on your own.

Some may think insurance is not needed, and it’s too much of an investment. But it’s indeed worth it.
