DSUSA cuts election debates as primaries begin

Dixie State University Student Association has shifted away from the debate atmosphere.

James Kener, a senior English major from Murray, and DSUSA election committee chair, said instead of having a debate, a candidate forum, where students can openly ask questions, will take place March 7 at 11 a.m. on the north field across from the Gardner Student Center.

“So, the reason that we’re calling it a candidate forum is just to make sure we give students the opportunity to (ask questions) instead of listening to a half-hazard debate with people that maybe don’t know how to debate,” Kener said. “We turned it into a position where we can get the most out of our candidates given the skill set that they have.”

Primary elections started Wednesday and will end Thursday at 3 p.m. Kener said during primary elections, candidates needed to take the initiative to let students know when voting was going on.

“Well, the primary (elections) was of course to have the candidates display that information themselves,” Kener said.

Ezra Hainsworth, Kendall Pitts and Moses Campbell are running for student body president. Casey Banner and Weston Zimmerman are running for vice president of academics. Kiel Lambson and Kyle Cummings are running for vice president of clubs. Students can vote by going to students.dixie.edu/voting/. The finalists will be announced Thursday tomorrow through The Dixie Life Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

General election polls opened up Tuesday at noon and close Thursday at 1 p.m.

The Dixie Sun is in the process of interviewing candidates. More information will be published soon.
