Veterans Day comes by every year to remind families, friends and loved ones why appreciating veterans is important to our society. Family legacies, deaths and loss of loved ones is a possibility all those who serve face.

“This year is a big date because Monday will be the 100th anniversary of Armistice [day]”

Randy Jasmine, poetry event coordinator and assistant professor of English.

Dixie State University has been showing its appreciation for veterans and their families every year on Nov. 11, and this year, an entire week is dedicated to honoring and remembering the sacrifices that are made by those who serve.

Steven Roberts, director of veteran and military services, started the Veterans Day celebration four years ago.

A different speaker is chosen every year for the Veterans Day ceremony, and this year will host Congressman Chris Stewart. During this event, there will also be a celebration of the U.S. Marine Corps birthday in which the oldest Marine in attendance serves a symbolic piece of cake to the youngest.

This year’s ceremony has been expanded to a full week to make more events available to students, so if they miss the ceremony, they can still celebrate later on in the week.

The crowning event is our Veterans Day Ceremony on Nov. 11, said veteran Spencer Thatcher, a senior biology major from Logan.

Another addition to this year’s ceremony is the attendance of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, an internationally recognized group of U.S. war veterans.

Veterans week will consist of movies, a documentary and panel discussion, as well as a movie night. Nov. 8 was a veteran’s poetry reading. The Veterans poetry reading is generally on the anniversary of armistice day after WWI; however, this year, it’s the week before because of scheduling conflicts. Though the two events are not directly correlated, they do share one thing: honoring veterans and their families and a way to connect the community.

“This year is a big date because Monday will be the 100th anniversary of Armistice [day]” Said Randy Jasmine, poetry event coordinator and assistant professor of English.

Roberts said the events are extended to the community as well. In the future, Roberts is hoping to host a banquet or something similar to a breakfast for the veterans who attend.

With so many options for events, there is no way to miss out on celebrating the veterans in your life or just honoring those who have served.
