OPINION | A harvest of essential, unique fall movies

There is no better way to get into the fall mood than to settle down with a bowl of popcorn and watch your favorite fall movies. There are several great movies that might rekindle the nostalgia of fall from your childhood like walking home from a long day of elementary school and being greeted with the smell of a spiced candle, the coziness of a warm blanket and the enjoyment of a fun fall movie. As a girl who loves fall and all of the vibes that come with it, I’m always looking for new movies to fit into the season.

I get incredibly bored and tired of being stuck inside all the time while the weather is freezing. Usually, I go for a good book, but sometimes that doesn’t cure the boredom. Having a few good movies that you can watch at any given point during the fall season is a good thing to have in your toolbox.

Nightmare Before Christmas

This classic movie is such a good one to not only watch but to have playing in the background while you do other things. I have had it play at least six times since October started, and although I don’t always watch it completely, it plays in the background while I do homework and chores.

The music is very good because the singers’ voices are nice to hear and the songs are catchy, so I can sing along if I want. I don’t always like doing things in silence, so having a movie playing with funny quotes and fun music to dance around and sing along with just makes it so much better. Plus, it gets me in the Halloween spirit.

Hocus Pocus

The characters are all so entertaining in this Halloween movie. I remember watching it for the first time when I was younger and absolutely loving it. The silly witches and the way they interact with each other are almost as much fun as the soundtrack.

I also have two sisters who love it just as much as I do. We quote lines yearlong and even do the witches’ iconic linked armwalk.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter” is a staple in my life. I adore the characters as well as the lessons that come from the story. The books were amazing, and for those books to be made into movies makes it even better. The setting of “Harry Potter” is set in the fall months through winter and spring. It gives me all the seasons but makes a big deal about the holidays.

It is a great fall movie because there are multiple movies, so you can binge-watch and curl up in bed or on the couch and enjoy a nice fall evening. The overall feel for the movies has a wide range of things from scary and sad to happy and silly.

The Goonies

Some people might not think this movie could be for the fall season, but this movie is probably my all-time favorite. It is about a treasure hunt that’s both chaotic and silly. A group of kids find a treasure map in one of their attics and jump at the opportunity to find gold or “the rich stuff” as they call it.

The adventure goes through them making their way through tunnels, booby traps and other challenges. It is basically a movie watching a group of kids having a good time and being crazy with each other.

It is set in October, so throughout the movie, the weather and clothing depict the fall season. There are also a few parts of the movie where it is creepy, weird and intense. It’s perfect for a fall movie night with family.

IT

Want a scary movie? The original “IT” movie was remade into a newer version, and although I liked the original movie, the newer version with Bill Skarsgard is very well done.

The kids acting in it makes it 10 times better than I could have ever imagined. I just remember being a kid and having a group of friends where we were all so full of energy and so opinionated to the point where we just talked on top of each other just like these boys do throughout the story. The kids acting in this movie is amazing because they really are committed. Plus, it’s a good scary movie with a good ending for Halloween time.

Some of these movies are not your traditional fall or Halloween movies. They are more based on the aesthetic and overall vibe of the season. Not everyone enjoys Halloween, so movies like these can give people the chance to enjoy this time of year.
