Flyers Blow the Dust Devils Back to Arizona

The River Valley Dust Devils made the trek to Walt Brooks Stadium to take on the Flyers of Dixie. Dixie came out strong with Justin Cummings running 15 yards into the endzone to break the ice. Tadd Challis started his night off with a 95-yard pass from Blake Barney. The Tigers ended the first quarter up 21-0.

The Flyers would not let up with Tadd Challis and Blake Barney teaming up again with a 29 yard pass to help put the Tigers up 35-0 before the break. That just was not enough for Hurricane kicker Austin Barker who kicked an amazing 43-yard field goal to end the half 38-0.

The Flyers were able to rest up during the break and came onto the field with fury. Blake Barney connected with Challis again on a 51-yard pass to open the half up. Kyle Hansen wanted a turn and caught a 28-yard pass in the endzone to end the third.

After being silent all night, the Dust Devils scored late in the game, and the contest wrapped up with Dixie flying high, 59-7.

‘The Hammer’ Drops on the Pirates in Preseason Battle

The Moapa Valley Pirates visited the Thunder at Desert Hills High School on Friday night, and left with sinking hopes and the weight of Thors hammer on their heads.

Desert Hills was in control from the first whistle to the last, showing to be the more dominate team in every aspect of play. Mike Needham showed just what the Pirates were going to have to face when he took the opening kick-off 50 yards, then followed that with another 40-yard run along the sidelines, and then punched in a touchdown two plays later. Needham wouldn’t stop there, he added another touchdown in the second quarter, getting the reception from quarterback Porter Harris and running free for the 30-yard touchdown.  Desert Hills’ front lines on offense and defense proved to be more physical and simply dominated the much smaller Moapa Valley line, providing large holes for running backs and linebackers to run through.

Turn-around player of the game was first year football player, Tavo Allegria, who was 100 percent on all extra points and field goals. Last week, Allegria struggled to find the middle of the goal posts. Coach Barry Bundy said during practice last week, the team rushed Allegria while he practiced kicking until he was able to get used to the pressure. It paid off in a big way as Allegria went 3-3 on extra points and nailed a 42-yard field goal in heavy winds.

Desert Hills gave Moapa several chances of making it a close game by throwing an interception and fumbling on the 5-yard line. The Thunder didn’t have much of a punch inside the redzone as they found themselves settling for turnovers or field goals.  Despite the officials’ making a point to get themselves noticed after the half by throwing penalty flags, Desert Hills continually seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time–definitely something the coaches will remind their players to be careful of going into region play in two weeks.

The Thunder defense continues to look strong during the preseason with the secondary continuing to improve.  Peter Brown, outside linebacker, made his presence known by forcing and recovering two fumbles from the Pirates. Both came at critical times when the game was still up for grabs.  The Thunder offense still has a ways to go before they equal the defense.  The passing game still needs a lot of work, unless you’re passing to Ty Rutledge, who seems to come down with the ball no matter where you throw it. Rutledge would add to the scoreboard in the third quarter with a sweep around the left end and fly past the defending Pirates for the touchdown from 12 yards out, making it 24-0.  The run game is the best offensive weapon the Thunder have, thanks to Mike Needham running with a power back style, punishing would-be tacklers if they try and stop him.  If you don’t believe me, ask the Moapa Valley secondary…several of them found out really quickly that Needham is a force, and it hurts when you get in his way.

Getting the 24-0 win was great, but it could have, and should have been a much greater deficit.  If the Thunder would have punched in the touchdowns while in the redzone, the score would have been 45-0.  Desert Hills will have one more chance to work out any kinks in preseason as they head up to North Sanpete next week.  The northern Utah team is notorious for dirty play and will provide a good challenge for the Thunder.

Tigers Tame Jags, Claim Another Preseason Win

The Hurricane Tigers welcomed the West Jordan Jaguars on to the new turf of Dixie State College Friday night for what was sure to be a cat fight. The Tigers will play on the campus of Dixie State for home games until the new football field and construction can be completed.

The Tigers wasted no time showing their claws as Brian Scott ran the ball into the endzone twice in the first quater. Hurricane’s defense was able to hold the Jaguars to eight points going into the half. The highlight of the first half was an 80-yard interception return from Hurricane’s Kellen Seely.

The Tigers forced four fumbles, intercepted the ball three times, and tamed the Jags, keeping them to only eight points per quarter for the second half. Hurricane’s shining star Brian Scott rushed 24 times for 182 yards and scored four touchdowns for the Tigers.

Hurricane took the game with a score of 48 to 36. The Tigers will hope to continue their winning preseason when they travel to Hunter High School next week.

Redmen Get Rammed Off The Field

The Highland Rams traveled down I-15 to take on the Redmen of Cedar High Friday Night.

Despite three Highland penalties in the first four plays of the game, including one before the ball was even kicked-off, the Rams were able to jump on the Redmen from the get-go.

Justin Weaver recovered a fumble on the Cedar 20 yard line and returned it 80 yards for the first touchdown of the game. Cedar tried to fight their way through the tough Highland defensive line, but with only mild success.

Senior Quarterback Anthony Smithson led the Rams with multiple rushes for long distances including a run of 70 yards for a touchdown.

The Rams went to the locker room up 41-0 at half. The Redmen scored late to avoid the shutout, but Highland still ran away with the 41-7 victory.

Next week the Redmen host Skyline High School, while the Rams host Provo High.

UPDATE: Crews Battling Lightning Caused Fires

Lightning has caused more than 10 fires since Friday night. The most visible fire from the St. George area is the Plateau Fire, located about 10 miles south of Bloomington. The fire has burned over 2,000 acres but has not threatened any structures. Resources from across the area were used to assist in keeping the fires from threatening any structures or roadways. A large California-based air tanker played a large part in the success of helping to control the Plateau Fire.

Due to the remote locations of the blazes, aerial attack crews were the most used resource. Smoke from these fires is visible from St. George, Mesquite, Nev., and along the Virgin River. Low winds and a cool day on Saturday helped the containment effort. Crews will be monitoring the current fires as well the entire region, as thunderstorms are expected throughout Sunday night into Monday morning.

Over 250 fire fighters are working with five helicopters, and 15 wildland fire engines to contain the several blazes. More resources are on standby and could be called in from across the state and region if needed.

Below is a list of the largest fires, their location, and acerage estimates.

Plateau Fire, located 10 miles east of Bloomington, 2,200 acres, 10% contained.

Scenic Fire, near Scenic, Ariz., 650 acres, 10% contained.

Middle Fire, 50 miles south of St. George, 850 acres, 70% contained.

UPDATE: Public Information Officer Kenton Call confirms that several fires have been started by lighting from thunderstorms that came through the area. The Dixie National Forest and BLM called in aerial attacks on the fires. Crews from across the state and area are expected to be fighting the multiple fires from the ground tomorrow. The fires are currently not threatening any structures.

“The fires are currently burning in pretty rugged terrain,” Call said. ” No firefighting action is worth compromising the safety of fire crews or the public”.

Crews are battling three lighting caused fires Friday evening on the Arizona strip. No structures are reportedly in danger. The fires have been named as follows. The Plateau Fire, assessed at 300 acres; the Sun Rock Fire, which is very small and no acreage has yet been assessed; and the Lime Kiln Fire, assessed at 120 acres.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign

Nearly 10,000 law enforcement agencies from all over the country are supporting Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, including Zion National Park.  The campaign, designed to combat impaired driving, started August 19 and will continue through September 5.

In 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that over 10,000 people died in crashes involving drivers who were at or about the legal limit.  Zion National Park Superintendent Jock Whitworth says that the park is “committed to protecting park visitors by intensifying our law enforcement efforts.  With twice as many alcohol-impaired accidents occurring over weekends and four times as many accidents occurring at night, we will be particularly vigilant during these times.”

Those who fail to drive sober may face jail time, lose their driver’s licenses, or be required to use ignition interlock devices.

Three Arrested on Drug and Weapon Charges

Three people have been arrested in Cedar City on felony weapon and drug charges.

Thomas Richard Dale Goatz, 22, Timothy Drew Goatz, 23, and Carmen Renee Doan, 34, were arrested Thursday by Cedar City Police on charges stemming from incidents in the Cedar City and Blanding areas.

Sgt. J.R. Robinson of the Cedar City Police Department said investigators from the Cedar City Police Department began an investigation of an automobile burglary in the Fiddler’s Canyon area. While the investigation was being conducted, officers learned of a possible burglary of a Utah police department, in which drugs, and firearms were taken.

During a traffic stop made by a UHP trooper near Salt Lake City, corroborating evidence about the burglary was yielded. This information revealed that the victim agency was the Blanding police, and also identified a list of suspects who committed the burglary.

A search warrant for a residence in Enoch was issued, and with the help of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, additional stolen guns and drugs from the Blanding Police Station were recovered. Officers arrested the suspects at the house in charges of possession of stolen guns and drugs.

The three were each charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute in a drug free zone, a second degree felony; nine counts of possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a third degree felony; nine counts of possession of a stolen firearm, a second degree felony; two counts of child endangerment, a third degree felony; and cultivation of marijuana in a drug free zone, a second degree felony.
